descriptionen

Completed in 1124 CE, GA1230 is a commentary on the four Gospels, in the classic form of Catena. It is currently preserved in the library of Saint Catherine monastery in Sinai, Egypt. The part of the Gospel of Mark uses the classic catena known as “Catena in Marcum” which is customarily attributed to Victor of Antioch, extensively. Yet, unlike Victor’s catena, it quotes the Gospel’s text completely, in its lemmata. The part of Mark’s ending (folios 146v to 148r) shows a dynamic discussion over the authenticity and appropriateness of reading Mark’s Long Ending (verses 16:9-20). The scribe clearly disagrees with both Eusebius of Caesaria’s dismissal of the long ending on exegetical grounds, and offers alternative readings to Victor’s catena, in the light of the antegraphs he accessed.
